EDUCATION

College Education Information

CCAF - Community College of the Air Force, Associates Degree

Upon graduating the SERE Specialist Training you will be given 50 credit hours towards your CCAF degree. 64 credits are required for your CCAF. Any additional credits you need to complete your CCAF will be paid 100% by SERE because it is mandatory that all SERE Specialist have a CCAF degree after 2 years of completing tech school.

Straight Out of High School

If you are strait out of high school you will still get 50 credits toward your CCAF degree, everyone does. After tech school these are the credits you will most likely need.

These credits are degree title dependent. Most people pick either "Survival Specialist" or "Search and Rescue" as degrees.

  English 101
  Algebra 101
  Speech 101
  Management 1
  Management 2
  Humanities 101
  Social Science 101

You Have College Already

If you have some college already make sure you tell your recruiter about your credits. In most cases it means you will graduate BMT with some rank on your shoulder. I entered the Air Force with 45.0 credits which is the minimum for E-3. If you took these classes in college chances are they will transfer over to your CCAF degree if you can provide a valid college transcript. In order to do so you need your college mailing address so the education office can verify your credits are true.

How It All Works

Once you graduate the SERE Indoctrination course at Lackland AFB, TX (SEREIC) you will PCS (Permanent Change of Station) to Fairchild AFB, WA to start tech school. Depending when you leave Lackland you may have some time to take CLEPs and DANTES tests. These tests are FREE and give you college credits for what ever class you need if you pass. If you fail you have 6 months to wait before you can re-take the test, other then that you have nothing else to lose. I know of several SERE Instructors who got there entire CCAF degree by taking CLEPS and DANTES tests. So lets say you fail the test and you need to take a college class to get the credits you need. SERE will pay 100% tuition for that course as long as it applies to your CCAF degree. If you can find 5-12 other people who need to take the same course, the professors will come to your base and teach the course at your work place, sometimes even during your work time! The bottom line is getting a degree in the SERE career field is dirt cheap and easy!

What About My CCAF? Bachelors and Masters Degree

MGI - Montgomery GI Bill, government paid money for school

After you get your CCAF your education shouldn't stop. The Air Force will pay 100% tuition for your Bachelors Degree. If that is not enough for you, you can use your MGI Bill which will give you 75% tuition for your Masters Degree. Sign up for the MGI Bill, you're crazy if you don't, that's my honest advise.

100% tuition for Bachelors Degree became effective October 2002
